Lancaster Duathlon

James McCracken wins his race for COLTThe sun certainly shined on Lancaster and Morecambe athletes on Sunday 15th April at the Salt Ayre Junior Duathlon with first places for 7 year old Rhys Aston in the Tristart category with a time of 6min 45 sec, 10 year old Eve Barrow in the Supersprint (6min 41sec), 10 year old James McCracken ( pictured left ) in Tristar 1 boys (13min 43sec) and 8 year old Sasha Oldham in Tristar 1 girls (14min 21sec). Superb achievements, especially for Rhys and Sasha who were the youngest in their age group.

There were a total of 105 competitors for this year’s event, 40 of which were members of Salt Ayre Cog Set, City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) and Lancaster & Morecambe Athletic Club. The event involved 10 races for children 7-18 years old. Competitors were required to complete a run on the athletics track followed by a bike race on the cycle track and then a final run to the finish line. The event is continuous, no rest allowed.

In total 14, of our athletes finished in the top 3 positions in their races many of whom had never taken part in a multi-sport event. Our youngsters where racing against members of established triathlon clubs including Mersey Tri, Manchester Triathlon Club, Bolton Triathlon Club and Tri Team Wigan, a testament to the talent within our area and the support from our regional cycling, triathlon and athletics clubs.

In Tristar 1 Rhys was followed in by 7 year old Issac Atkinson from LAMAC

 (6:57), Issac’s first ever multi-sport event, in third place 8 year old Thomas Dowthwaite (7:22) from Salt Ayre Cog Set and in 4th Lewis Trowse also from Salt Ayre Cog Set . In Supersprint, 9 year old Mia Johnson of Salt Ayre Cog Set came in third with a time of 7:32.

In Tristar 1, Salt Ayre Cog Set again dominated the first 3 places with a fantastic finish that saw 9 year old Abigail Trowes just loose the first place to Sasha by only 2 seconds with 8 year old Louise Didsbury finishing third with a time of 15:26. LAMAC’s Lydia Shenton came in 4th with a time of 16:27. In Tristar 2, COLTS 10 year old Amy Monkhouse finished second beating several 11 and 12 year old athletes with a time of 20:34 and in Tristar 3 COLT’s 13 year old Sam Monkhouse took 2nd place with a time of 22:53. In the Sprint category Salt Ayre Cog Set Bailey Johnson and Bethan Abra took 2nd and 3rd places and In Tristar 3 girls, Georgia Hannam of COLT came in 4th with a time of 28:04. Finally in the Youth category 14 year old John Didsbury of Cog Set came 2nd with a time of 21:39 and Mathew Shackleton from LAMAC finished 3rd with a time of 21:46. In Juniors, Gavin Neil finished 3rd with a time of 28:33.

Further achievements include 7th place for Cog Set’s Aaron Patterson in Tristart, Oliver Patterson and Adam Hodgson also of Cog Set achieving 5th and 6th places in Tristar 1 boys and Milly Hirst (Cog Set) and Larissa Hannam of COLT with 5th and 6th place in Tristar 1 girls. In Tristar 2 boys, Shea Hannam of COLT and Will Eagles of Salt Ayre Cog Set achieved 6th and 7th places with Max Boardman and James Moore a respectable 12th and 16th. In Tristar 2 girls, Ffion Ashton of COLT just lost out on 4th place finishing 5th with a time of 21:05 and Grace Nolan Barnes coming in 10th. In Tristar 3 boys, Toby Oldham secured 5th and in Youth category, Elliot Robertson of COLT secured 5th place, an impressive performance considering he had been confined to bed with a virus two days earlier.
