Three members of COLT (city of Lancaster Triathlon Club) competed in the Boundary Breeze triathlon at which took place at the Boundary Breeze Water Park in the beautiful Cheshire countryside just outside Holmes Chapel and Knutsford.
In the Youth Category (U17) after experiencing the recent disappointment of crashing off his bike during his last race, Liam McGuinness ( pictured left ) put his frustrations behind him with a convincing win –an important result as the event was an Inter Regional championship qualifying triathlon race. After a strong open water swim (400m), Liam left the lake and onto his bike in fourth position. A powerful cycle (10k) saw him exit transition two and into the run (3k) in second place where he quickly took the lead and with an assertive run went on to increase his advantage, finishing one minute ahead. This win confirms Liam's selection for the third year running to represent the North West in the Youth team at the British Regional Championships which this year will be held on 19 September at Parc Bryn Bach, Wales. Liam will be joined by fellow COLT Mary Hodgson who has already qualified for the U15 team.
153 triathletes lined up for the sprint event (750m swim; 23km bike; 5k run) including COLT members and brother and sister Tom Rowley and Nicola Rowley. First home in 24th position –and third in his age category (17-19 years) was Tom. Nicola was no less impressive in the women’s event – 3rd overall and 1st in her age category (20-24 years).
Meanwhile COLT Junior Sarah Hodgson travelled to Hyde Park, London to compete in the Youth Category of the British Aquathlon Championships. The event was included in the festival of triathlon as part of the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship London presented by Tata Steel. Sarah left the 400m swim in the Serpentine in around 17th position but worked her way through the field on the run to finish in 6th position.
As well as the COLT Youth Development Squad sponsors, Technology Farm Ltd, the triathletes would like to thank Carnforth Otters Swimming Club; Lancsater City Swimming Club; Fleetwood Swimming Club; Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde AC and Lancaster and Morecambe AC for their coaching and support.
The British Aquathlon Championships event was held at Salford Quays on Saturday for athletes aged 20 and over. The event also included non-championship categories for younger athletes, and four City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Juniors entered these events. First off in the non-championship races were the Youth (15-16 year old) racers with a 400m swim followed by a 2.5k run.
Not too confident with a wetsuit transition, Sarah Hodgson decided to brave the quay in her swimming costume. This proved a good tactic as she completed the swim and left the transition area as the second place female was leaving the water. She built on her lead during the run to take 1st place. The race was a good practice session for Sarah who travels to Hyde Park, London at the weekend for the British Youth Championship Aquathlon where she will meet much tougher competition.
COLTs second win followed quickly after Sarah’s victory. Beau Smith led the Junior (17-18 year olds) race from the start. A confident 750m swim followed by a quick transition meant he was never challenged on the 5km run leading to a straightforward victory. As the Juniors ran with the Senior athletes, Beau should be pleased with his 11th place overall. Paul Hodgson and Tom Rowley left the water together but Tom struggled with his wetsuit in transition allowing Paul to build up a lead in the run. Paul finished 3rd Junior and 15th overall, followed by Tom who was 4th placed Junior.
Ten City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club members travelled to the Liverpool Aquatics Centre on Sunday for the National Biathlon Championships, having qualified for the event at the North West Biathlon and Open Triathlon Championships which were held at Salt Ayre in May. Athletes are awarded points for their swim and run times which are added together to achieve an overall result. The athletes returned with a gold medal, a fastest run medal and a 5th place medal.
The club’s youngest athletes ran 1000m on the track and swam 50m. Georgia Hannam had an outstanding run, achieving a new best time of 3:30.67 which gave her 7th place overall. Amy Banks, growing in confidence with each event she enters, achieved personal best times in both her run and swim, leading to 53rd overall position. Together with Elizabeth Goodfellow (61st) the team achieved an excellent 5th place overall.
The U15 team also ran 1000m but needed to swim 100m. Mary Hodgson achieved a PB in the pool of 1:11.68 but struggled with the wind on the track. Nevertheless she should be pleased with her overall position of 26th. Despite the wind, Fenella Gabrysch improved on her run time and with Paige Clinton (32nd) the team was placed10th overall.
The best result of the day came in the U17 girls’ event where the athletes run 2000m and swim 200m. Sarah Hodgson ( left photo )quickly established a lead in the run which she held throughout her heat to win the fastest run medal. Being able to track her closest rivals in the swim led to personal best time and 7th place in the swim section. Then the long wait for the results ensued – before she was announced as British Biathlon Champion.
The distance stepped up again for the U19 competitors with the athletes running 3000m and swimming 200m. In the girl’s event, Isobel Rawlinson’s ( right photo )excellent run was instrumental in her achieving an outstanding 5th place overall. In the corresponding boys’ event, James Bale, running in the first heat, tucked into the pack well and produced a huge PB of 10:27.71. Paul Hodgson was caught out by the wind and struggled to find his form in the second heat. Both competitors were left with little energy for the swim; Paul finishing the competition in 11th and James in 12th.
As well as the Youth Development squad’s sponsor’s Technology Farm, COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC; Dallam Running Club and Garstang ASC for providing sponsorship for the athletes to travel to the National Championships. Together with Lancaster City ASWPC and Carnforth Otters Swimming Club they have also helped prepare the athletes for this event.
The Junior squad will next be competing at the Manchester tri club swim-bike-run triathlon on Sunday 11th July at Knutsford.
Last weekend again saw members of COLT taking to the open water. Members of the club from as young as 11 took part in the second event of the Epic open water swim series in Derwent water.
The youth section of COLT displayed an outstanding performance in the 500m and 1 mile swims. Wilf Goodfellow (14) battled his sister Robin Goodfellow(16) for second place, managing to overtake her at the last buoy, and knocking fellow competitor Liam Russell (16) into third place. Robin finished 1st female in the race and fourth overall, whilst younger sister Elizabeth Goodfellow(11) finished 4th female, and 13th in the swim. Alison Oliver came 7th lady, and Marie Jones 21st lady in this race.
The most exciting race of the day, as far as COLT was concerned was the 1 mile race. Beau Smith (16) once again raced towards the finish line in a battle for first place, but was “pipped” at the post to finish second. Both 1st and 2nd finishing in a time of 21.01….
Alison Russell warmed up from the 500m swim finished 35th female in this race. Other COLT competitors in the mile swim were Martin Armer,Anthony Calverly, and Tony Jeffrey.
Alison Russell, Wilf and Robin Goodfellow all improved their times and placing from the previous Coniston swim, Beau his time. All other COLTS swimmers were new to the race; the next event is the 11th July at Ullswater, lets see if more COLTS will rise to the challenge.
Sunday saw fifteen City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Juniors competing in the Bolton Metro Triathlon at Salt Ayre, which formed part of the North West Children’s series. The athletes swam in the 25 metre pool then jumped onto their bikes and cycled around the cycle track before finally running on the athletics track. The distances for each discipline depending upon the athlete’s age and experience in the sport.
The event included a “taster” races for those new to the sport in which the club’s newest members participated. Both Elias Giles and Toby Granger won their respective age groups and Remi McVey was placed second. Patrick McGuinness won his age group in the sprint event.
In the main competition James McCracken competed in the U9 (Tristarts) event and secured a comfortable third.
The U11 (T1) age group swam 150 metres followed by a 3000m cycle and 1200m run. The club’s first win came in the girl’s event where Amy Monkhouse showed aptitude in all three disciplines to take a 40 second victory. In the boy’s event Ethan Robertson was 4th in his first triathlon.
The club had two competitors in the U13 (T2) age group. These triathletes swam 200m, cycled 6000m and finally ran 1200m. Elizabeth Goodfellow was 7th in a large girls’ field and Sam Monkhouse 9th in the very competitive corresponding boys’ event.
Three girls lined up for the U15(T3) event. First home was thirteen year old Mary Hodgson in 2nd place. She was well supported by Jessica McCracken in 5th and Fenella Gabrysch in 7th. Wilf Goodfellow was 7th in the boys’ event.
The most impressive result of the day was, as expected, in the U17 (Youth) category where, against strong opposition, Liam McGuinness secured the victory overtaking the second place athlete in the run. Swimming 400m; cycling 9000m and running 3000m, Liam finally finished 12 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. There was 3rd place for Robin Goodfellow in the girls’ event.
In addition to the Youth Development Squad sponsors “Technology Farm” COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC and Dallam Running Club for preparing the athletes for the run; Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club, Carnforth Otters and Garstang ASC for their swimming training and Cog Set for their cycling training.
The Junior squad will next be competing in the second North West Series race which is the Manchester tri on Sunday 11th July. The Youth athletes, however, are off to Liverpool next weekend for their next event.
Biathle is an event organised by Pentathlon GB.It is a continuous event which involves a run followed by a swim and then a second run. The distances are the same as in biathlon -so if in biathlon your age group runs 1000m and swims 50m the event would be 500mrun-50mswim-500m run.
The National Biathlon and World Championship selection event will take place at Salford Quays on Sunday 8th August 2010. Entry form are available at www.pentathlongb.org with a closing date of 08/07/2010. Individuals should submit their own entries. Usually the first six from each event are selected to represent GB at the World Championships which are, this year, being held at Dubai on 30th October.
The catch is that although biathle is a World Championship event lack of Pentathlon-GB funding means that competitors travelling to Dubai are required to pay the cost of their flights and accommodation within the team hotel. However, competing at Salford does not commit any qualifying athlete to travel to Dubai.
Last year COLT athletes Sarah Hodgson, Tom Rowley, Paul Hodgson and Nicola Rowley qualified for the world championships which were held in Monacco. Mary Hodgson and Fen Gabrysch also took part in the training.
Not only is the venue for the British Championships relatively local but training is available for members of pentathlon GB with on of the GB coaches, Nigel Rowley, every Saturday morning between 7.30-9am at Fleetwood Swimming Pool. This is open to all COLT members who are members of pentathlon GB. There will be a nominal charge to cover the season's training -this is yet to be notified.
The Hodgson children travel to Fleetwood most Saturday mornings and I would be happy to help organise car sharing. On the weeks we go, we pass Lancaster Railway Station at 0645 and would be happy to pick up from there or points along the way. Athletes need swim costume or trunks+ T shirt or tri suit, hat, goggles and running shoes. It is a really fun session whether or not you have decided to compete in an event. Athletes who are well enough organised should be back in Lancaster in time for COGSET.
For further details please contact me or the organiser Babs Rowley on 07939 255531
On Saturday 29th it was the North of England Athletics Championships, and there were two junior COLTS competing. Sarah Hodgson raced the U17 Womens' 3000m and had a great race, finishing a close second. Beau Smith ran the 800m, achieved a new pb of 1:59.08, and is now NoEAA U17 Mens' Champion.
Well done to both of our track stars.

The club had four competitors in the U15 (T3) age group. These triathletes ran 2000m, cycled 7500m and finally ran 800m. First back for the club in the girl’s event was Mary Hodgson who achieved 6th place overall. Mary was well supported by Jessica McCracken (7th) and Fenella Garbrysch (8th) who were both close on her heels. In the boy’s event Elliot Robertson finished 8th.
The most impressive result of the day was, as expected, in the U17 (Youth) category who competed over the same course as the U15 age group. Against strong opposition Liam McGuinness took the lead in the final lap of the second run and opened up a twelve second gap to take 1st place.
COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC and Dallam AC for preparing the athletes for the run and Cog Set for their cycling training.
Five City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club members joined hundreds of young athletes who travelled to Crystal Palace, London on Sunday to represent their schools in the British Schools Biathlon Championships.
650 young people from around the country contested the championship finals, where they faced the challenge of a swim and a run. 4500 young athletes took part in the 12 regional qualifying events held at venues throughout the Country. 50 athletes of each gender were then selected to contest the year 9 and below competitions on Sunday, with 40 competing in the year 10, year 11 and year 12/13 competitions. There were also team events for each year group and a competition for teachers.
The British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships is supported by Sport England and run by Pentathlon GB, the national governing body for modern pentathlon.
Biathlons are one of the traditional ways that young people try out multi-sports events in an enjoyable, safe and competitive environment. After mastering swimming and running, they can gradually add the other disciplines of the modern pentathlon - fencing, shooting and show jumping – before tackling a full modern pentathlon.
For Years 8 and above the event consisted of a 100m swim and 1000m run.
A full modern pentathlon now consists of fencing, swimming, show jumping and a combined run/shoot.
Isaac Scott formed part of Bolton School’s Y9 Boys’ team which was placed 4th. Individually he was placed 37th and also achieved an excellent personal best time of 2:57.64 in the 1000m run.

City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club’s juniors were back in action on Sunday at the North West Open tetrathlon and biathlon competition.
The club’s youngest athletes swam 50m and followed this with a 1000m run on the track. Eight year old Aimee Banks, in her first biathlon, was placed 1st in the swim with a time of 39.15s, which together with a third in the run in a time of 4:40.27 was sufficient to win the silver medal overall. This was particularly impressive as Aimee will still be in this age category next year.
The U13 Girls Team consisting of Georgia Hannam, Amy Burns and Olivia Clinton were thrilled to win the team gold. Individually Georgia Hannam was placed third in the swim with a personal best time of 33.56s and third in the run with a personal best time of 3:39.25 leading to the individual bronze medal. Amy achieved lifetime bests in both her swim and run to place 8th overall and there was a personal best for Olivia in the pool of 34.36 on her way to 9th place overall. The busiest athlete of the day was Isobel Rawlinson who competed in the tetrathlon. First she competed against 32 other athletes in the fencing component of the competition. She then had a 200m swim event and finally a 2000m run during which she was required to stop and shoot at two stations. This was Isobel’s first tetrathlon competition and was an opportunity for her to compete against the best pentathletes from throughout the UK.
All the athletes taking part in the competition form part of the COLT Youth Development Squad. During the competition, Graham Hodgson, managing director of the Lancaster based company Technology Farm Ltd, presented the athletes with technical tops and the club with a sponsorship cheque for £1000 to provide financial support to the club’s young athletes competing in multi sports at national and international level.
COLT would also like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC and Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Pool Club who have helped prepare the athletes for this event.

With a number of other sporting events taking place at the weekend only two City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club members travelled to Wigan on Sunday for the North of England Biathlon and Triathlon Championships.
Snow on the outdoor track meant that the run was moved to the indoor track at Robin Park, Wigan. Both athletes, Georgia Hannam and Amy Burns, competed in the U13 category. Georgia had an outstanding day winning the run and the swim on her way to winning the overall event. Amy Burns also had an excellent day taking half a second off her swim personal best and being placed 4th overall.
There was also good news for four other COLT junior members this week. Following selection competitions throughout the country last November Isobel Rawlinson, Sarah Hodgson (both LGGS) Robin Goodfellow ( Dallam School ) and Isaac Scott (Bolton School) heard this week that they had qualified to compete in the British Schools Biathlon Championships which are to be held at The National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace in March.
COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC and Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club for coaching the athletes for these events.
Please find details of a 'tri-out' academy day at Preston for 11-17 year olds. We anticipate some interest from COLT juniors -please let me know if you would like to attend this day and we will contact the organisers. As this event clashes with the bi- tri- tetra- event the sponsorship launch will be delayed to an alternative date. There will still be COLT representatives at both events.
Jennie Hodgson
I’d like to make you and your club aware of recent developments regarding the NW Junior Triathlon Academy which is open to youngsters throughout the North West. The academy is designed to guide youngsters who aspire to BTF funded pathways and provide support for clubs and coaches throughout the region.
There are currently 25 youngsters aged 11-17 on the academy and Sunday February 28th is the next opportunity for other youngsters to join us. We will be running a ‘tri out’ day at Preston Arena which will include a 6 minute run test on the athletics track and a 4 miles time trial on the closed cycle circuit. At this stage there are no specific times or standards, especially for the younger age groups, but those children who attend should be competent and competitive swimmers.
If you have any youngsters within your club who would be interested in trialling for the academy the please feel free to contact me and bring them along to Preston, 9:00am start.
Further details will be sent out by email closer to the date for those who respond to this mail, please circulate this to club members or anyone else you think may be interested and please feel free to ask further questions. Club coaches are particularly welcome at all regional academy days and we would actively encourage you to attend and gain greater understanding of the academy structure.

Modern Pentathlete, Isobel Rawlinson, was in action again last weekend representing City of Lancaster Triathlon Club (COLT) at the National triathlon (run, swim, shoot) championship which was held in Wolverhampton. On Saturday she competed in the swim where she achieved a personal best time in the swim of 2:23.50 which placed her 7th in this discipline. Whilst the shoot is her weakest discipline her 21st place kept her in a good overall position going into the second day. Despite a disappointing run on Sunday she should be thrilled with her 15th place overall. The experience of competing in a two day competition should stand her in good stead for the future.
COLT juniors will next be in action at the North of England Winter championships which are to be held on 31st January 2010 at Leigh Sports Village.
Eleven City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club members travelled to Liverpool on Sunday to represent their schools in the North West Schools biathlon championships.

Modern Pentathlete Isobel Rawlinson was in action again last weekend at the North West triathlon (run, swim, shoot) championship which was held at Salt Ayre. With the first six in each age group qualifying for the National Championship there was always going to be strong competition. Although her results in all three disciplines were slightly below her best, Isobel achieved 4th place overall, thus booking her place at the National Championships which will be held over the weekend of 14th/15th November in Wolverhampton.
10 year old Olivia Clinton entered the open biathlon competition – once again sweeping the board winning the swim and run on her way to overall victory. She should be congratulated on a new personal best time for her swim.
COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC and Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club for coaching the athletes for this event.
COLT juniors will next be in action representing their schools in the North West Schools biathlon championships and national schools qualifier in Liverpool on Sunday 8th November.
Siblings Paul Hodgson and Sarah Hodgson recorded excellent performances at the world biathle (run-swim-run) championships in Monaco.
Paul was placed 13th in the 17/18 year old category and Sarah was placed 9th in the 13/14 category. Great experience for them both competing in an international competition - and the Med was an excellent location for the competition - it certainly beat the qualifying competition which was in Salford Quays! Both are keen to be selected for the GB squad again next season as the event is being staged in Dubai. Well done.
The North West Biathlon Championships to be held at Salt Ayre Sports Centre, Lancaster on Sunday 27th September 2009. The Closing date is Thursday 10th September, contact Jennie Hodgson to enter.

Ten City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club members travelled to Clitheroe on Sunday for the Ribble Valley Biathlon and Triathlon Championships. The athletes returned with a team gold medal, a team silver medal, two individual gold medals, two individual silver medals, an individual bronze medal, two fastest swim medals and two fastest run medals.
The club’s youngest athletes ran 1000m on the track and followed this with a 50m swim. Olivia Clinton set the standard winning the swim just touching out the second placed swimmer and then winning the run with a comfortable margin.
In the U13 category there were personal bests for all three athletes, Mary Hodgson, Georgia Hannam and Elizabeth Goodfellow, in both the pool and on the run. These excellent performances earned the team second place and Mary the individual bronze medal.
The U15 girls, who swim 100m and run 1000m, fielded four athletes; Sarah Hodgson, Lauren Munro-Bennett, Lauren Sharkey and Paige Clinton. With Sarah Hodgson winning the silver medal overall; Lauren Munro Bennett winning the run and being placed 6th overall and Lauren Sharkey being placed 5th overall the girls won the team gold medal with the second placed club trailing 900 points behind. Paige should be particularly pleased with her personal best time in her swim.
The distance stepped up again for the U17 teams with the athletes running 2000m and swimming 200m. Isobel Rawlinson won the swim and despite being piped to the line in the run won the overall gold medal. She also participated in the triathlon event, and despite a slightly erratic shoot she still won the silver medal. Robin Goodfellow was placed 4th overall.
COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC, Dallam AC, Helm Hill Runners, Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club, Carnforth Otters ASC and Troutbeck ASC for coaching the athletes for this event.
Sarah Hodgson will next be competing at the World Biathle (run-swim-run) Championships in Monaco representing Great Britain on Sunday 20th September. The rest of the junior squad will next be in action at the North West Triathlon and Open Biathlon Championships on Sunday 27th September at Salt Ayre.
Biathle is a continuous run/swim/run event and the British Championships and World championship qualifier was held at Salford Quays on Sunday 2nd August. With 5 athletes being selected from each age group, competition was fierce to be selected for the British Team. In the U15G event Sarah Hodgson was placed 3rd and in the U19 event brother Paul Hodgson was placed 4th - both athletes thereby booking their places for The World Championships at Monaco on Sunday 20th September.
This event formed part of the North West Junior Series and it was no surprise to see Beau Smith cross the line first in the Youth category. He was ably supported by Liam McGuinness in 3rd spot. Specialist fell runner, Lauren Munro-Bennett, took 4th place in the girls' T3 event. It was good to see Liam's younger brother, Patrick McGuinness, competing in the T2 category where he was placed 11th.
Whilst the senior COLT members were battling their way around Bolton and the Ironman UK course, Beau Smith was flying the COLT flag at the London Triathlon. It speaks volumes about Beaus talent and potential that he could take sixth place at such a well attended race.
Beau Smith continued his winning ways after a hard-fought race! Coming out of the swim in the lead, Beau was caught and passed on the cycle section (on wet grass on his road bike!), he showed great strength as he fought back on the run to take the win. Liam McGuinness contuinued his rich vein of form with an inspiring performance.Liam again finished fourth after a valiant run.
Beau Smith was the Youth Supersprint triathlon race winner and first in all disciplines. He was backed up by Liam McGuinness who was narrowly pipped for 3rd place, to finish in 4th.
Beau Smith finished 11th but was very disappointing considering whilst winning at Hetton Lyons the previous week Beau beat at least three of the boys who finished in front of him here, including the race winner.
The 8th Ribble Valley biathlon, triathlon and tetrathlon will be held at Edisford, Clitheroe, Lancashire on Sunday 6th September 2009.
The competition is open to all Pentathlon-GB members from age groups Youth E to Masters, however classes may be combined depending on the number of entries. Individuals may be entered for biathlon only, both biathlon & triathlon or all 3 categories. There will also be a team competition for groups of 3 athletes competing in the same class. COLT teams will be selected based on previous performances, where known. This event is suitable for all abilities.
The Pentathlon-GB 2009 rule book will apply for the biathlon and triathlon. UIPM rules with local amendments will apply for the tetrathlon. Please contact : Jennie Hodgson by email for further details.
Further details are HERE and an Entry form is HERE
Beau Smith was in action yesterday (12th July), over in the North East where he took part in the Hetton Lyons Junior Triathlon. It was open water swim and draft legal bike over the Supersprint distance, to replicate this years IRC race, which made it worth the journey over there. He continued his winning streak, taking the win by 50 seconds overall, and is hoping to continue his good form next weekend when he races in the National Youth Aquathlon Championships at Parc Bryn Bach on Saturday, followed by the Youth Supersprint Triathlon at Boundary Breeze on Sunday.
Due to other events taking place on this date only two athletes made the journey to Leigh. In the 15/16 age category Robin Goodfellow was placed 6th and younger sister Elizabeth Goodfellow was placed 11th in the 11/12 year old category.
In the second of the NW series races Liam McGuinness was placed 3rd in the youth's race and his younger brother Patrick (future COLT?) won the short course race. Mary Hodgson was placed 4th in the Tristars 2 category.
Issac Scott was thrilled to be placed 4th boy in the intermediate category (school years 7&8) and younger brother Rafi backed him up well finishing 25th boy. Beau Smith once again won the senior race (school year 9 and above)for the third consecutive year. Also this year for the first time he was the overall winner (Seniors race over the same distance as Adults & Vets), with a time of 23:58 from second in 25:24.
Sunday saw him running along the prom in Morecambe in the 'Keep on Ticking' 5K Fun Run, and to his delight he won! The course was a little long (measured at 3.3 miles), and his time was 18:05, from last year's winner Lee Pascoe of Blackburn Harriers in second with 18:24.
City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Juniors had their first taste of a triathlon event at the weekend when they participated in the Bolton Metro Triathlon at Salt Ayre, which formed part of the North West Children’s series. The athletes swam in the 25 metre pool then jumped onto their bikes and cycled around the cycle track before finally running on the athletics track. The distances for each discipline depending upon the athlete’s age and experience in the sport.
The event included a “taster” races for those new to the sport in which sisters Olivia and Paige Clinton took part. Both girls won their respective age groups convincingly with the fastest times in each of the three disciplines.
In the main competition Joshua Banks competed in the U12 (T1) age group swimming 150 metres followed by a 3000m cycle and 1200m run. Although this was his first triathlon, Joshua was third out of the water but lost ground on the bike, a new discipline to him. Nevertheless following a strong run he finished an excellent 5th overall.
The club had two competitors in the U14 (T2) age group. These triathletes swam 200m, cycled 6000m and finally ran 1200m. Mary Hodgson, in her first triathlon, was 4th out the water, but also lost ground in the bike section. With the second fastest run in her age group she achieved 5th place overall. Mary was well supported by Jessica McCracken who was close on her heels and achieved a credible 9th place overall.
The most impressive result of the day was, as expected, in the U17 (Youth) category where, against strong opposition, Beau Smith led from the start. Swimming 400m; cycling 9000m and running 3000m, Beau finished over 2 minutes ahead of his nearest rival.
Two future COLTs also took part in the competition section for the U9s “Tristarts”. Joshua’s eight year old sister Aimee Banks was placed 3rd in the girls’ event and Jessica’s brother, seven year old James McCracken, 3rd in the boys’ event.
COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC for preparing the athletes for the run; Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club and Carnforth Otters for their swimming training and Cog Set and Kent Valley RC for their cycling training.
The Junior squad will next be competing in the second North West Series race which is the Wirral Mini tri on Sunday 28th June.
For series placings, its your five best results to count. Also, your best three from the first four races can be considered for the North West team for the National Inter Regional Championships, which will be open water for the first time this year.
For children wanting racing experience, its a great little series and it would be good to see some junior COLTS out there!

Nineteen City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club members travelled to Macclesfield on Sunday for the National Biathlon Championships, having qualified for the event at the North West Biathlon and Open Triathlon Championships which were held at Salt Ayre last month. The athletes returned with three team national bronze medals, an outstanding achievement for a new club.
The club’s youngest athletes ran 1000m on the track and followed this with a 50m swim. Olivia Clinton’s incredible finishing speed secured her 1st place in her run heat and 9th place overall in the competition. Joshua Banks’ impressive personal best time in the swim helped him to achieve an overall 12th place.
The U13 and U15 teams also ran 1000m but needed to swim 100m. The U13 girls’ team, consisting of Mary Hodgson (17th), Kirsty Fairhurst (31st) and Georgia Hannam (36th) were positioned 3rd after the run. Despite all three girls achieving personal best times in the water the team finished 6th overall.
The U15 girls’ team consisted of Sarah Hodgson (14th), Lauren Sharkey (26th) and Paige Clinton (43rd). There was a personal best time for Sarah on the track which helped the girls finish in a credible 5th position.
The U15 boy’s team consisting of Alasdair Fairhurst (8th), Luke Saul (22nd) and Isaac Scott (26th) however made it to the podium in third place. Isaac produced personal best times in both disciplines with Alasdair improving his run time.
The distance stepped up again for the U17 teams with the athletes running 2000m and swimming 200m. The girl’s team, comprising of Isobel Rawlinson, Robin Goodfellow and Reanne Harvey won the bronze team medal with best times achieved by Isobel in both discipline to earn an individual 9th place.
The third team medal went to the U17 men’s team consisting of James Bale (15th), Bill Timpany (19th) and Dylan Stewart (29th). Bill should be particularly pleased with his improvement in the run.
Paul Hodgson was the club’s sole entrant in the U20 class. Despite an accident prior to the swim which prevented him starting the run Paul improved his best swim time. In the Masters event Jennie Hodgson was placed 5th overall.
COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC and Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club for providing sponsorship for the athletes to travel to the National Championships. Together with Kendal and Dallam AC and Carnforth Otters Swimming Club they have also helped prepare the athletes for this event.
