Whilst the shoot is a relatively new discipline for Shea his 5th left him in 4th position overall.

Fleetwood Triathlon

COLT - AMY MONKHOUSE Fleetwood Triathlon 2011Seven young triathletes from COLTS (City of Lancaster Triathlon Club) competed in the last event of the NW Junior series in Fleetwood. Part of the Esplanade in Fleetwood was closed for the bike part of the event with the swim taking place in at the Fleetwood YMCA.

In Tristar 1 (U11) Amy Monkhouse (pictured) secured a second place with a time of 17:55 out of a field of 20 girls and Ffion Ashton fourth place with a time of 18:20. In the boys category James McCracken came in 5th with a time of 20:07.

In Tristar 2 (U13) Ethan Robertson and Ellias Gilles represented the COLT with excellent performances and in Tristar 3, (U15) Elliot Robertson put in a fantastic bike and run after a mistake by the lap counters in the pool resulted in him completing an extra 50meter swim. Despite this Elliot came in 7th confirming the form he showed in Chester the week before which led him to a first place in the category. Also in Tristar 3, Sam Monkhouse came in 4th with a time of 31:30.

A special mention should be made regarding the COLT performances this year in the NW series. On the 26th November, the first 5 in each category will receive trophies and a prize. Out of over 500 competitors, COLT has 5 youngsters in the top 5 in their age groups. These are:

Amy Monkhouse 2nd out of 74 U11 girls
Ffion Ashton 4th out of 74 U11 girls
Ethan Robertson 5th out of 100 U13 boys
Elliot Robertson 3rd out of 52 U15 boys
Sam Monkhouse 5th out of 52 U15 boys

Most impressive however was 17 year old Beau Smith who, as well as winning his own age group (17-19 year olds) also won the open Senior age group –and was instrumental in COLT winning the overall NW Club award.

Ribble Valley Championships

Meanwhile, COLT Junior athlete Beau Smith had a successful day with an easy victory in the Kendal triathlon and five COLT Club members travelled to Clitheroe for the Ribble Valley Biathlon and Triathlon Championships. The athletes returned with four individual gold medals, three individual silver medals and two individual bronze medals, three fastest swim medals and two fastest run medals.

The club’s youngest athletes ran 500m and followed this with a 50m swim. In the boys’ event Shea Hannam won the run and the swim to win the competition overall. In the corresponding girls’ event Emma Whitaker also won the run and took the silver medal overall. Grace Nolan-Barnes backed her up well winning the bronze medal.

In the U15 category Georgia Hannam replicated her brother’s performance and won the swim and the run on her way to achieving the gold medal. She was backed up by Charlotte Whitaker who took the bronze medal overall.

In the triathlon (including shooting) competition Shea won the overall competition as did Emma and Charlotte was placed 2nd.

As well as the squad’s sponsors, Technology Farm, the athletes would like to thank the coaches at Lancaster city and Carnforth Otters swimming clubs and Lancaster and Morecambe AC for preparing them for these event.

World Biathle Championships

Three members of City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club were selected to represent Great Britain at the World Biathle Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria on Sunday.

COLT - MARY HODGSON WORLD SILVER MEDALLISTThe best result came early in the day in the girls’ U15 event. The girls run 500m the swim 100m and then run a further 500m as a continuous event. Representing GB, Mary Hodgson (PICTURED)had a slow start and in a tightly packed field finished the first run towards the back of the main field. Following a good transition she made up a huge amount of ground in the swim leaving the water in 5th position. She quickly moved into 4th place and on the final bend of the second run passed a South Africian competitor to put herself in the medals. Sensing that the second place girl was tiring she kicked again and took the silver medal on the line. Her marvellous performance helped the British team take the gold medal overall.

Sarah Hodgson was selected to compete in the U17 women’s event which consisted of a 1000m run, 200m swim and a further 1000m run. Despite being disappointed with her run should be pleased with her overall 10th position.

Finally, British Champion Paul Hodgson competed in the U20 event where competitors run 1500m, swim 200m then run a further 1500m. Sensing the pace dropping during the first run Paul took the lead and entered the water in first place. During the swim he was overtaken by a Cyprian athlete and two South Africian athletes and went out on the second run in 4th position. He moved back into third place during the second run but a late surge from another athlete left him in 4th.

Recent Events August

COLT (City of Lancaster Triathlon Club) Juniors have been experiencing the taste of success over the last couple of weeks.

COLT - JNR WOMENAt the National Club Relays held at Holme Pierre Point COLT entered a Junior Ladies Team. One hundred and fifty four teams lined up for the Saturday race which included both the junior and senior women’s teams. COLT Juniors, Sarah Hodgson, Robin Goodfellow, Isobel Rawlinson and Florie McLeish each swam 500m as a relay team passing a baton band to the following swimmer. By the completion of the 4th leg Florie exited the water with a huge lead and passed the baton to Sarah for the first of the girl’s 15k bike sections. Sarah had almost completed the first 5k on the bike section before inevitably the stronger, more experienced teams started to pass her, but nevertheless the girls went on to win the silver medal in the Junior category.

The U17 Inter-Regional Triathlon championships took place the following weekend and three COLT Juniors were selected to represent a fourteen strong North West contingent.

In the U15 event Mary Hodgson had an outstanding race. Exiting the water in after 300m in 7th position she worked hard on the 7k bike section. Although tiring towards the end of the bike she immediately started picking up places in the run to finish in 6th place.

In the U17 event, Florie McLeish had an outstanding swim leaving the water after 400m in 2nd position. Although her inexperience showed in the early stages of the 11k bike she picked up places in the run and finished an excellent 6th. She was well backed up by Sarah Hodgson who finished in 17th position.

The event also formed the last of the British Super Series for U20 athletes. Beau Smith and Paul Hodgson both came out of the water with the leaders. A quick transition put Beau out with the leaders on the bike and he went on to finish in 10th place. Paul went on to finish in 21st position.

Seven members of COLT were in action the same weekend in the Northwest Triathlon (swim, run, shoot) and Open Biathlon (run, swim) event which was held at Salt Ayre. In the U17 girl’s category Paige Clinton finished 4th. In the U15 girls’ category Georgia Hannam’s personal best times in both disciplines helped her win the silver medal overall. Ellena Clarkson won the medal for the fastest swim. In the U13 category where athletes run 1000m and swim 50m Olivia Clinton won the medal for the fastest swim. In the U11 competition Grace Nolan-Barnes won the silver medal. Also taking the silver medal in the triathlon event was Lucy Tidswell. In the boys’ event Shea Hannam won the tri and took the silver medal in the biathlon.

Other impressive results from COLT Juniors over the last few weeks include a new course record by Amy Monkhouse at the North West series Triathlon at Troutbeck and 4th place for Ffion Ashton in the same event. In addition six athletes took part in the Clitheroe Aquathlon with Ffion (3rd); Ethan Robertson (2nd); Elias Giles (3rs); Remi McVey (4th); Elliot Robertson(3rd) and Ellena Clarkson (5th) in their age categories.

National Biathle Chamionships

COLT - PAUL HODGSON NATIONAL BIATHLE CHAMPION 2011The British Biathle championships were held in Salford Quay again this year –and also formed the trials for the World Biathle Championships to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria later this year. With the first five finishers in each age group guaranteed selection for the British Team, competition was fierce throughout the day. Five City of Lancaster Triathletes took part in the event which involved a run followed by a non-wetsuit swim in the quay followed by a second run.

First COLT to race was nine year old Grace Nolan-Barnes, who in her first biathle event ran 500m then swam 50m before running a further 500m. Whilst a little hesitant in the first run, Grace made excellent ground in the swim before finishing in an overall 7th. As a result Grace has been selected as a reserve for the British team.

U13 athlete, Remi McVey also in his first biathle coped well the event and laid down a solid foundation for the future.

In the U15 race, twenty four girls toed the line. Mary Hodgson set off with the leaders from the gun and quickly settled into 6th place in the first 500m run. After a strong 100m swim she held her position well moving up to take 5th place in an exciting sprint finish and thereby booking her place in the British team travelling to Sofia. Mary was well backed up by Ellena Clarkson competing in her first biathle competition.

In the U17 age group fifteen year old Sarah Hodgson ran 1000m followed by a 200m swim and a second 1000m run. She quickly settled into fifth position in the first run before moving up into 4th in the swim, the position she held to the tape. She joins her sister in the British team travelling to Bulgaria.

COLT’s best results came towards the end of the day. In the Junior men’s section Paul Hodgson ( pictured ) sat in the second group during the first 1500m run, confident that the leaders had misjudged the pace and gone out too quickly. Although normally his weaker discipline, having conserved his energy he moved into the lead in the 200m swim, then extended his lead in the second 1500m run to finish as the British Junior Men’s Biathle Champion. He is hoping to perform well again in Sofia next month.

As well the Youth Development Sponsors, Technology Farm, the athletes would like to thank the NW biathle hub, Carnforth Otters, Lancaster City Swimming club and Lancaster and Morecambe AC for preparing the athletes for the event. The World Championships take place on Sunday 25th September.

Junior Round-up

Over the last month COLT (City of Lancaster Triathlon) Juniors have been clocking up a number of successes across the Country.

The British Junior Championships, held at Blenheim this year, gave Beau Smith and Paul Hodgson the opportunity to race against the very best junior triathletes in the country. Beau finished the 750m swim; 20k bike and 5k run event in an excellent 15th position and Paul in 24th.

COLT - Beau Smith wins at chester deva triathlonThe following week Beau raced for the first time over the “Olympic" distance, of 1500m swim, 40k bike & 10k run at Chester, in the North West Standard Distance Championships (Senior). Beau was able to put in a fast swim to put him into the lead going into first transition. By the end of the bike section he’d extended his lead before finishing the run to win the race by four and a half minutes overall!

Following such an impressive debut over the longer distance, Beau was offered a starting place in the "pro" wave of the Liverpool Olympic distance triathlon. This gave him a chance to test himself against some elite athletes. He swam strongly to enter first transition in third place. Out onto the bike and he rode strongly to return to transition in 7th position. An extremely fast run split saw him make up two places to finish in a well-deserved 5th.

From Olympic distance to SuperSprint distance (400m swim, 10k bike, 2.1k run), Beau raced again the following Thursday evening, 30th June, at the GE Triathlon SuperSprint Eliminator at Canary Wharf. This event was part of the British Triathlon Senior Super Series, and included a field of elite athletes from Great Britiain, mainland Europe, Australia and the USA. The race format was two heats, with the first eight from each heat, and the four fastest losers overall progressing to make a final of twenty athletes. In the heat, he put in a blistering swim to exit the water with the leaders and head out onto the bike leg with the lead pack. He stayed with the lead pack for the duration of the bike, and then did enough on the run to qualify automatically for the final by finishing 7th in his heat. There was then less than an hour and a half to recover, before doing it all again in the final! He again swam at such a pace that he left the water in fourth position, and first Brit behind three Australians, and again made the lead bike pack. The pace was ferocious, but he stayed with it, riding with full-time international senior athletes, and holding his nerve to enter the second transition in the lead. At just 17, he wasn't able to stay with the pace on the run, but gave it everything he had left to finish in an amazing 11th position.

At the weekend Paul Hodgson was back in action in the British Junior Super Sprint series, this time with sisters, Sarah Hodgson, who competed in the youth’s race and Mary Hodgson, who competed in the U15 race ,at Porthcawl. Paul finished 22nd; Sarah 13th and Mary finished an impressive 2nd having recorded the fastest run of the day in her category.

The same weekend ten year old Amy Monkhouse, took first place in the girls 9-10 year old race at the Mersey Triathlon. The event formed part of the North West Children’s Series and result puts Amy in contention to win the series. Also achieving a personal best in the same race was Ffion Ashton who finished 3rd.

Beau continued his impressive run of form this past weekend at the London Triathlon. The countries largest traithlon saw some of the best athletes in the world race alongside mere mortals. Beau had a place in the Junior Elite race and did the club proud. The speedy COLT led coming out of the water by a few seconds. A strong bike kept him in contention as a pack of 5 went away from the rest of the field. Beau ran strongly and finished in an amazing fourth place in a very quick time of 1.14.14. Only 45 seconds seperated the top 5 finishers, that's how close the race was. Beau is flying the COLT flag in the elite junior ranks, and everyone at the club is proud of his ( and the other juniors ) achievements.

The future of the club is looking very bright indeed. Well done everyone.

Strathclyde & St Annes Triathlons

A total of nine triathletes represented City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) last weekend.

The 2011 British Triathlon Youth & Junior Super Series is designed to bring together the best young triathlon talent from across the UK allowing them to race head to head.

Sarah Hodgson and Beau Smith travelled to Strathclyde Park, Motherwll, for the second race in the series. Sarah, who was competing in the Youth (15/16 year old age group) made a good start and was lying 6th at the end of the 400m swim. Although her bike skills are improving she lost a place on the 11k bike section, finishing after a confident 2.5k run in a pleasing 7th position. Beau, competing in the combined Junior and Senior Elite race 750m Swim, rode 21k and ran 5k. An excellent swim saw Beau 4th Junior out on the road. He continued to use his considerable experience to complete an outstanding bike section leading the Junior race by the conclusion of the bike leg. Although he tired slightly towards the end of the run he crossed the line as 4th Junior. Unfortunately, it later emerged that a minor infringement during transition had lead to him being given a time penalty –unaware of the situation he didn’t wait for the time penalty and was disqualified.

COLT - Elliot Robertson St Annes Triathlon 2011The fourth St Anne’s triathlon was held the same day. Seven COLT juniors took part. The swim took place in the St Anne’s pool, the ride along the promenade to the North and South of the pool and the run along the sea front to the South and back along the inner path to the pool complex.

Over 400 participants entered. Of specific note was the weather. Competitors had to endure gale force winds and squalls hence extreme wind chill and wind resistance. All COLT participants competed enthusiastically and confidently despite these conditions and all especially the younger participants should be congratulated for even taking part.

Difficulties with marshalling lead to a number of competitors failing to follow the correct route and hence being disqualified. Despite this there were some excellent COLT performances. Elliot Robertson ( pictured ) and Sam Monkhouse did superbly in the U15 race completing 4th & 7th respectively in the boys’ category. In the U13 race, Ethan Robertson finished 8th and Elias Giles 16th amongst the boys competing and in the U11 race Grace Nolan-Barnes achieved 5th place. Also in this event was Ffion Ashton and Amy Monkhouse, who performed superbly and together with a third competitor were way out in front on the bike. Unfortunately however, a key turning point on the ride was only marshaled and signposted after these leading three passéd and hence they failed to make the turn.

National Biathlon Championships

COLT - Shea HannamCity of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club Juniors have been busy competing over the last few weeks.

Nine junior COLT Club members travelled to Sutton Coldfield for the National Biathlon Championships, having qualified for the event at the North West Biathlon and Open Triathlon Championships which were held at Salt Ayre in February. Athletes are awarded points for their swim and run times which are added together to achieve an overall result. The athletes returned with a 5th place medal and a silver team medal.

The club’s youngest U11 athletes ran 500m on the track and swam 50m. Shea Hannam had both an outstanding swim, achieving a new best time of 34.9, and run , clocking a new best time of 1:37.87 which gave him 5th place overall.

The girls’ U11 team of Grace Nolan-Barnes, Emma Whittaker and Lucy Tidswell showed strength in depth achieving the silver team medal. Grace produced best times in both disciplines and there was a PB for Lucy in the swim.

The U15 team ran 1500m and swam 100m. Mary Hodgson achieved a PB in the pool of 1:06.95 but struggledCOLT - U11 Girls with the wind on the track. Nevertheless she should be pleased with her overall position of 12th. Together with twelve year olds Georgia Hannam (20th) and Elizabeth Goodfellow (57th) the team were place a credible 6th overall.

In the U17 girls’ event Paige Clinton finished 22nd overall and in the U19 girls’ event, Robyn Goodfellow finished 13th.

This year’s Northwich Aquathlon, part of the NW Children’s series, proved very popular necessitating staggered starts in the pool unlike previous events in the series. The consequence was that the order the competitors crossed the finish line was not necessarily the final order after taking into account the differing start times.

Five COLT athletes competed this year. In the U11 event, Amy Monkhouse again delivered a strong performance against athletes from Pheonix Swimming, Eaglesfield and Fleetwood Swimming Club. Ffion Ashton delivered her best performance to date, especially on the run and Emma Whitaker produced a strong final lap against a determined field.

In the U13 event, Ethan Robertson ran an impressive final lap and in the U15 race, Sam Monkhouse joined Elliot Robertson after a lay off due to injury.

As well as the Youth Development squad’s sponsor’s Technology Farm, COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC; Dallam Running Club, Lancaster City ASWPC and Carnforth Otters Swimming Club who have also helped prepare the athletes for this event.

Wigan Aquathlon - 3rd April 2011

Three City of Lancaster triathlon (COLT) juniors competed in the Wigan Aquathlon, which formed part of the NW Children’s triathlon series, at Leigh on Sunday. The athletes swam in the 25m pool and then ran out onto the cycle path and playing fields surrounding the sports centre. Despite rain threatening for much of the day, most of the races were held in sunshine.

In the U11 class the athletes swam 150m and ran 1200m. Seasoned aquathlete, Amy Monkhouse, following a steady swim, worked her way through the field to finish in second place. She was joined by Ffion Ashton who completed the event with a strong finish.

The club’s only other competitor was in the U15 category. Mary Hodgson, following a steady 400m swim and excellent transition left the pool hall in 4th position. She then worked through the leaders in the first half of the 3000m run, took the lead and finished a minute ahead of the next NW competitor.

As well as the Junior Development Squad sponsors, Technology Farm Ltd., COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC, Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club and Carnforth Otters ASC for coaching the athletes for this event.

Junior Elite Duathlon & more - 30th March 2011

A total of 13 athletes represented City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) at multi –discipline events at the weekend.

Sarah Hodgson and Beau Smith travelled to Loughborough for the British Elite Duathlon Championships. Sarah, who was competing in the Youth (15/16 year old age group) made a good start and was lying 4th at the end of the first, 2.5k run. Her inexperience showed during the 10k bike section, but following a strong second, 1.25k, run she finish in an excellent 8th position. Beau, competing in the Junior Section ran 5k, cycled 20k and then ran a further 2.5k. With the Juniors racing with the seniors, Beau found the early run pace hard, but nevertheless worked hard through the cycle section and second run to finish 10th Junior.

Also selected to go through to the semi final was Year 9 athlete Mary Hodgson representing Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School. Fleetwood Triathlon - 26th September 2010

Seven athletes from City of Lancaster Triathlon Club Youth Development Squad competed in the Fleetwood triathlon on Sunday. In the U11 category Amy Monkhouse was second girl and Ethan Roberston was placed 3rd in the boys’ event. There was also a 3rd place for Sam Monkhouse in the U13 boys’ event. Elliot Robertson was placed 6th in the U15 boys’ category.

It was in the older age categories that COLT athletes really dominated the fields. In the U17 Youths event, Liam McGuinness not only took first place but also confirmed his position as the winner of the NW Summer Series, having already won the winter series earlier this year.

In the adults event sixteen year old Beau Smith, having won the event last year lead from the start. With the fastest swim and bike splits he took an easy victory. COLTs Youth Development Squad’s third victory came in the women’s category where Nicola Rowley took first place. Also competing in the squad was Paul Hodgson who finished in 16th place out of a total of 317 finishers.

All the triathletes have been training hard for these events and as well as COLT Youth Development sponsors Technology Farm, the triathletes would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC; Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water polo Club; Carnforth Otters Swimming Club; COG set and Kent Valley Cycling Clubs for preparing the athletes for the events.

Inter-Regional Championships - 26th September

Two athletes from City of Lancaster Triathlon Club were selected to represent the North-West Region at the Inter-Regional Championships which were held at Parc Bryn Bach in South Wales.

The cold wet weather meant that for the youngest triathletes; the U13 and U15 age categories the lake was deemed too cold to swim in under British Triathlon Federation Rules and so at the last minute the event was altered to a run-bike-run duathlon event. Mary Hodgson competing in the U15 category made a cautious start in the first 500m run. The bike course was quite technical in nature and Mary’s inexperience showed; nevertheless she held her position well. The second run was over 2.5kms and Mary’s confidence grew with each runner she overtook. She should be pleased with her final 16th place in her first national triathlon competition.

For Liam McGuinness competing in the Youth age group this was the final year he would be young enough to represent the North West in this completion –having previously been selected over the last few years he was able to bring far more experience to the event. The field was larger in the Youth’s event as Open competitors were allowed to apply for entry to compete alongside those that had qualified through their regions. The organizers declared that the water temperature had risen sufficiently to allow the full triathlon event to go ahead but despite their wetsuits the triathletes still found the water cold. Liam in particular struggled with the cold water but then made good ground in the bike and run to finish 30th overall.

NW Open Triathlon & Biathlon Championships - 12th September

Eight members of COLT (City of Lancaster Triathlon Club) Youth Develpoment Squad were in action again last weekend an Open Biathlon (run, swim) event which was held at Salt Ayre.

In the U15 girls’ category athletes are required to run 1500m and swim 100m. Mary Hodgson’s personal best time of 1:08.59 for 100m in the swim helped her win the silver medal overall. She was well backed up by Paige Clinton who also achieved a PB in the water of 1:11.23.

Georgia Hannam continues to dominate the region in the U13 category where athletes run 1000m and swim 50m. He winning run time of 3:30.51 set her on course for winning the overall competition. Amy Burns also produced a new PB in the swim of 34.51 and together with Olivia Clinton the girls won the team competition.

The youngest U11 competitors run 500m and swim 50m. Grace Nolan-Barnes produced personal bests in both disciplines on her way to winning the bronze medal. Also taking the bronze medal in the boys’ event was Shea Hannam who produced a PB in the run. Backing up Shea was Kit Nolan-Barnes with personal bests in both the swim and the run.

As well as Youth Development Sponsors Technology Farm Ltd. COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC, Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club and Carnforth Otters for coaching the athletes for this event.

Troutbeck Triathlon - 22nd August

COLT - Lauren Munro-Bennett(left)and Sarah Hodgson(centre) U17 GirlsFour members of the COLT Junior section competed in the NW children’s series Triathlon at Troutbeck Bridge. First off was specialist swimmer Scott Munro-Bennett in the U15 boys’ category who led the field after the 200m swim. Despite being overtaken on the bike section he rallied well and finished a pleasing 5th.

The U15 girls’ category was large enough to split into two waves and first off were the 13 year old girls including COLT, Mary Hodgson. Second out the water after the swim she briefly took the lead in the bike before being overhauled again; nevertheless she quickly regained the lead on the run and finished her wave in first place. She then had to wait for the 14 year old girls to complete the course before finding out she had finished a strong second overall in the age group and first in the North West category.

Last to race were the U17 girls and COLT had two girls in this event. Sarah Hodgson led from the gun, with the fastest swim, bike and run and Lauren Munro-Bennett made it a COLT 1st and 2nd following an excellent run where she finally shook off the third placed athlete.

Mary Hodgson will be next be competing on the 19th September representing the North West at the Inter Regional Championships at Parc Bryn Bach South Wales where she will be joined by fellow COLT Liam McGuinness. This event is being held alongside the British Junior Elite Triathlon where COLT Junior Beau Smith will also be in action.

As well as COLT Junior Development sponsor’s Technology Farm, the athletes competing at Troutbeck would like to thank Lancaster City swimming club; Troutbeck Bridge swimming club; COG set and Lancaster and Morecambe AC and Helm Hill Running club for preparing the athletes for the event.

Boundary Breeze - 25th July

COLT - Liam McGuinness at Boundary Breeze TriathlonThree members of COLT (city of Lancaster Triathlon Club) competed in the Boundary Breeze triathlon at which took place at the Boundary Breeze Water Park in the beautiful Cheshire countryside just outside Holmes Chapel and Knutsford.

In the Youth Category (U17) after experiencing the recent disappointment of crashing off his bike during his last race, Liam McGuinness ( pictured left ) put his frustrations behind him with a convincing win –an important result as the event was an Inter Regional championship qualifying triathlon race. After a strong open water swim (400m), Liam left the lake and onto his bike in fourth position. A powerful cycle (10k) saw him exit transition two and into the run (3k) in second place where he quickly took the lead and with an assertive run went on to increase his advantage, finishing one minute ahead. This win confirms Liam's selection for the third year running to represent the North West in the Youth team at the British Regional Championships which this year will be held on 19 September at Parc Bryn Bach, Wales. Liam will be joined by fellow COLT Mary Hodgson who has already qualified for the U15 team.

153 triathletes lined up for the sprint event (750m swim; 23km bike; 5k run) including COLT members and brother and sister Tom Rowley and Nicola Rowley. First home in 24th position –and third in his age category (17-19 years) was Tom. Nicola was no less impressive in the women’s event – 3rd overall and 1st in her age category (20-24 years).

Meanwhile COLT Junior Sarah Hodgson travelled to Hyde Park, London to compete in the Youth Category of the British Aquathlon Championships. The event was included in the festival of triathlon as part of the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship London presented by Tata Steel. Sarah left the 400m swim in the Serpentine in around 17th position but worked her way through the field on the run to finish in 6th position.

As well as the COLT Youth Development Squad sponsors, Technology Farm Ltd, the triathletes would like to thank Carnforth Otters Swimming Club; Lancsater City Swimming Club; Fleetwood Swimming Club; Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde AC and Lancaster and Morecambe AC for their coaching and support.

Salford Quays Aquathlon - 18th July 2010

The British Aquathlon Championships event was held at Salford Quays on Saturday for athletes aged 20 and over. The event also included non-championship categories for younger athletes, and four City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Juniors entered these events. First off in the non-championship races were the Youth (15-16 year old) racers with a 400m swim followed by a 2.5k run.

Not too confident with a wetsuit transition, Sarah Hodgson decided to brave the quay in her swimming costume. This proved a good tactic as she completed the swim and left the transition area as the second place female was leaving the water. She built on her lead during the run to take 1st place. The race was a good practice session for Sarah who travels to Hyde Park, London at the weekend for the British Youth Championship Aquathlon where she will meet much tougher competition.

COLTs second win followed quickly after Sarah’s victory. Beau Smith led the Junior (17-18 year olds) race from the start. A confident 750m swim followed by a quick transition meant he was never challenged on the 5km run leading to a straightforward victory. As the Juniors ran with the Senior athletes, Beau should be pleased with his 11th place overall. Paul Hodgson and Tom Rowley left the water together but Tom struggled with his wetsuit in transition allowing Paul to build up a lead in the run. Paul finished 3rd Junior and 15th overall, followed by Tom who was 4th placed Junior.

National Biathlon Chamionships - 4th July 2010

Ten City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club members travelled to the Liverpool Aquatics Centre on Sunday for the National Biathlon Championships, having qualified for the event at the North West Biathlon and Open Triathlon Championships which were held at Salt Ayre in May. Athletes are awarded points for their swim and run times which are added together to achieve an overall result. The athletes returned with a gold medal, a fastest run medal and a 5th place medal.

The club’s youngest athletes ran 1000m on the track and swam 50m. Georgia Hannam had an outstanding run, achieving a new best time of 3:30.67 which gave her 7th place overall. Amy Banks, growing in confidence with each event she enters, achieved personal best times in both her run and swim, leading to 53rd overall position. Together with Elizabeth Goodfellow (61st) the team achieved an excellent 5th place overall.

The U15 team also ran 1000m but needed to swim 100m. Mary Hodgson achieved a PB in the pool of 1:11.68 but struggled with the wind on the track. Nevertheless she should be pleased with her overall position of 26th. Despite the wind, Fenella Gabrysch improved on her run time and with Paige Clinton (32nd) the team was placed10th overall.

COLT - National U17 Biathlon Champion Sarah Hodgson & Isobel RawlinsonThe best result of the day came in the U17 girls’ event where the athletes run 2000m and swim 200m. Sarah Hodgson ( left photo )quickly established a lead in the run which she held throughout her heat to win the fastest run medal. Being able to track her closest rivals in the swim led to personal best time and 7th place in the swim section. Then the long wait for the results ensued – before she was announced as British Biathlon Champion.

The distance stepped up again for the U19 competitors with the athletes running 3000m and swimming 200m. In the girl’s event, Isobel Rawlinson’s ( right photo )excellent run was instrumental in her achieving an outstanding 5th place overall. In the corresponding boys’ event, James Bale, running in the first heat, tucked into the pack well and produced a huge PB of 10:27.71. Paul Hodgson was caught out by the wind and struggled to find his form in the second heat. Both competitors were left with little energy for the swim; Paul finishing the competition in 11th and James in 12th.

As well as the Youth Development squad’s sponsor’s Technology Farm, COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC; Dallam Running Club and Garstang ASC for providing sponsorship for the athletes to travel to the National Championships. Together with Lancaster City ASWPC and Carnforth Otters Swimming Club they have also helped prepare the athletes for this event.

The Junior squad will next be competing at the Manchester tri club swim-bike-run triathlon on Sunday 11th July at Knutsford.

Derwentwater Epic Swim - 20th June 2010

Last weekend again saw members of COLT taking to the open water. Members of the club from as young as 11 took part in the second event of the Epic open water swim series in Derwent water.

The youth section of COLT displayed an outstanding performance in the 500m and 1 mile swims. Wilf Goodfellow (14) battled his sister Robin Goodfellow(16) for second place, managing to overtake her at the last buoy, and knocking fellow competitor Liam Russell (16) into third place. Robin finished 1st female in the race and fourth overall, whilst younger sister Elizabeth Goodfellow(11) finished 4th female, and 13th in the swim. Alison Oliver came 7th lady, and Marie Jones 21st lady in this race.

The most exciting race of the day, as far as COLT was concerned was the 1 mile race. Beau Smith (16) once again raced towards the finish line in a battle for first place, but was “pipped” at the post to finish second. Both 1st and 2nd finishing in a time of 21.01….

Alison Russell warmed up from the 500m swim finished 35th female in this race. Other COLT competitors in the mile swim were Martin Armer,Anthony Calverly, and Tony Jeffrey.

Alison Russell, Wilf and Robin Goodfellow all improved their times and placing from the previous Coniston swim, Beau his time. All other COLTS swimmers were new to the race; the next event is the 11th July at Ullswater, lets see if more COLTS will rise to the challenge.

Bolton Triathlon - 20th June 2010

Liam McGuinness and Robin Goodfellow COLTSunday saw fifteen City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Juniors competing in the Bolton Metro Triathlon at Salt Ayre, which formed part of the North West Children’s series. The athletes swam in the 25 metre pool then jumped onto their bikes and cycled around the cycle track before finally running on the athletics track. The distances for each discipline depending upon the athlete’s age and experience in the sport.

The event included a “taster” races for those new to the sport in which the club’s newest members participated. Both Elias Giles and Toby Granger won their respective age groups and Remi McVey was placed second. Patrick McGuinness won his age group in the sprint event.

In the main competition James McCracken competed in the U9 (Tristarts) event and secured a comfortable third.

The U11 (T1) age group swam 150 metres followed by a 3000m cycle and 1200m run. The club’s first win came in the girl’s event where Amy Monkhouse showed aptitude in all three disciplines to take a 40 second victory. In the boy’s event Ethan Robertson was 4th in his first triathlon.

The most impressive result of the day was, as expected, in the U17 (Youth) category where, against strong opposition, Liam McGuinness secured the victory overtaking the second place athlete in the run. Swimming 400m; cycling 9000m and running 3000m, Liam finally finished 12 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. There was 3rd place for Robin Goodfellow in the girls’ event.

 Biathle Training - 9th June 2010

Biathle is an event organised by Pentathlon GB.It is a continuous event which involves a run followed by a swim and then a second run. The distances are the same as in biathlon -so if in biathlon your age group runs 1000m and swims 50m the event would be 500mrun-50mswim-500m run.

The National Biathlon and World Championship selection event will take place at Salford Quays on Sunday 8th August 2010. Entry form are available at www.pentathlongb.org with a closing date of 08/07/2010. Individuals should submit their own entries. Usually the first six from each event are selected to represent GB at the World Championships which are, this year, being held at Dubai on 30th October.

The catch is that although biathle is a World Championship event lack of Pentathlon-GB funding means that competitors travelling to Dubai are required to pay the cost of their flights and accommodation within the team hotel. However, competing at Salford does not commit any qualifying athlete to travel to Dubai.

Last year COLT athletes Sarah Hodgson, Tom Rowley, Paul Hodgson and Nicola Rowley qualified for the world championships which were held in Monacco. Mary Hodgson and Fen Gabrysch also took part in the training.

Not only is the venue for the British Championships relatively local but training is available for members of pentathlon GB with on of the GB coaches, Nigel Rowley, every Saturday morning between 7.30-9am at Fleetwood Swimming Pool. This is open to all COLT members who are members of pentathlon GB. There will be a nominal charge to cover the season's training -this is yet to be notified.

The Hodgson children travel to Fleetwood most Saturday mornings and I would be happy to help organise car sharing. On the weeks we go, we pass Lancaster Railway Station at 0645 and would be happy to pick up from there or points along the way. Athletes need swim costume or trunks+ T shirt or tri suit, hat, goggles and running shoes. It is a really fun session whether or not you have decided to compete in an event. Athletes who are well enough organised should be back in Lancaster in time for COGSET.

For further details please contact me or the organiser Babs Rowley on 07939 255531

British Schools Biathlon Championships - Sunday 21st February

Five City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club members joined hundreds of young athletes who travelled to Crystal Palace, London on Sunday to represent their schools in the British Schools Biathlon Championships.

650 young people from around the country contested the championship finals, where they faced the challenge of a swim and a run. 4500 young athletes took part in the 12 regional qualifying events held at venues throughout the Country. 50 athletes of each gender were then selected to contest the year 9 and below competitions on Sunday, with 40 competing in the year 10, year 11 and year 12/13 competitions. There were also team events for each year group and a competition for teachers.

The British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships is supported by Sport England and run by Pentathlon GB, the national governing body for modern pentathlon.

Biathlons are one of the traditional ways that young people try out multi-sports events in an enjoyable, safe and competitive environment. After mastering swimming and running, they can gradually add the other disciplines of the modern pentathlon - fencing, shooting and show jumping – before tackling a full modern pentathlon.

For Years 8 and above the event consisted of a 100m swim and 1000m run.

A full modern pentathlon now consists of fencing, swimming, show jumping and a combined run/shoot.

Isaac Scott formed part of Bolton School’s Y9 Boys’ team which was placed 4th. Individually he was placed 37th and also achieved an excellent personal best time of 2:57.64 in the 1000m run.

Sarah Hodgson competed for Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School in the Year 10 competition and was placed 9th overall having achieved a best time in the swim (1:07.55) and the run (3:10.62) sections.

Eight year old Aimee Banks, in her first biathlon, was placed 1st in the swim with a time of 39.15s, which together with a third in the run in a time of 4:40.27 was sufficient to win the silver medal overall. This was particularly impressive as Aimee will still be in this age category next year.

The U13 Girls Team consisting of Georgia Hannam, Amy Burns and Olivia Clinton were thrilled to win the team gold. Individually Georgia Hannam was placed third in the swim with a personal best time of 33.56s and third in the run with a personal best time of 3:39.25 leading to the individual bronze medal. The busiest athlete of the day was Isobel Rawlinson who competed in the tetrathlon. First she competed against 32 other athletes in the fencing component of the competition. She then had a 200m swim event and finally a 2000m run during which she was required to stop and shoot at two stations. This was Isobel’s first tetrathlon competition and was an opportunity for her to compete against the best pentathletes from throughout the UK.

All the athletes taking part in the competition form part of the COLT Youth Development Squad. During the competition, Graham Hodgson, managing director of the Lancaster based company Technology Farm Ltd, presented the athletes with technical tops and the club with a sponsorship cheque for £1000 to provide financial support to the club’s young athletes competing in multi sports at national and international level.

North of England Winter Biathlon & Triathlon Championships - Sunday 31st January

With a number of other sporting events taking place at the weekend only two City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club members travelled to Wigan on Sunday for the North of England Biathlon and Triathlon Championships.

Snow on the outdoor track meant that the run was moved to the indoor track at Robin Park, Wigan. Both athletes, Georgia Hannam and Amy Burns, competed in the U13 category. Georgia had an outstanding day winning the run and the swim on her way to winning the overall event. Amy Burns also had an excellent day taking half a second off her swim personal best and being placed 4th overall.

There was also good news for four other COLT junior members this week. Following selection competitions throughout the country last November Isobel Rawlinson, Sarah Hodgson (both LGGS) Robin Goodfellow ( Dallam School ) and Isaac Scott (Bolton School) heard this week that they had qualified to compete in the British Schools Biathlon Championships which are to be held at The National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace in March.

COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC and Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club for coaching the athletes for these events.

Junior Triathlon - North West Academy

Please find details of a 'tri-out' academy day at Preston for 11-17 year olds. We anticipate some interest from COLT juniors -please let me know if you would like to attend this day and we will contact the organisers. As this event clashes with the bi- tri- tetra- event the sponsorship launch will be delayed to an alternative date. There will still be COLT representatives at both events.
Jennie Hodgson

I’d like to make you and your club aware of recent developments regarding the NW Junior Triathlon Academy which is open to youngsters throughout the North West. The academy is designed to guide youngsters who aspire to BTF funded pathways and provide support for clubs and coaches throughout the region.

There are currently 25 youngsters aged 11-17 on the academy and Sunday February 28th is the next opportunity for other youngsters to join us. We will be running a ‘tri out’ day at Preston Arena which will include a 6 minute run test on the athletics track and a 4 miles time trial on the closed cycle circuit. At this stage there are no specific times or standards, especially for the younger age groups, but those children who attend should be competent and competitive swimmers.

If you have any youngsters within your club who would be interested in trialling for the academy the please feel free to contact me and bring them along to Preston, 9:00am start.

Further details will be sent out by email closer to the date for those who respond to this mail, please circulate this to club members or anyone else you think may be interested and please feel free to ask further questions. Club coaches are particularly welcome at all regional academy days and we would actively encourage you to attend and gain greater understanding of the academy structure.

Regards
Marc Laithwaite
NW Regional Academy Head Coach

The North West Childrens Series

As in previous years, there will be a winter and summer series of events for children. These events are for youngsters aged 8 to 16 (age at 31/12/10) and include short course as well as full distance races so that all levels of ability are catered for.

There are still a few outstanding details to resolve with regard to the summer series and so neither a series criteria nor Inter Regional Championships (IRCs) selection policy can be stated at this point in time. North West Triathlon & Open Biathlon Championships

Modern Pentathlete, Isobel Rawlinson, was in action again last weekend representing City of Lancaster Triathlon Club (COLT) at the National triathlon (run, swim, shoot) championship which was held in Wolverhampton. On Saturday she competed in the swim where she achieved a personal best time in the swim of 2:23.50 which placed her 7th in this discipline. Whilst the shoot is her weakest discipline her 21st place kept her in a good overall position going into the second day. Despite a disappointing run on Sunday she should be thrilled with her 15th place overall. The experience of competing in a two day competition should stand her in good stead for the future.

COLT juniors will next be in action at the North of England Winter championships which are to be held on 31st January 2010 at Leigh Sports Village.

North West Schools Biathlon Championships

Eleven City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club members travelled to Liverpool on Sunday to represent their schools in the North West Schools biathlon championships.

The club’s youngest athletes ran 500m on the track and followed this with a 50m swim. Olivia Clinton, representing Cathedral Catholic Primary School was placed 5th overall in the Year 6 Girls’ event.

In the Year 7 Girls’ event COLT members Kirsty Fairhurst and Amy Burns both formed part of the Lancaster Girls’ Grammar team. Kirsty achieved an excellent 3rd place overall and Amy should be pleased with a personal best time in her swim and 10th place overall. Their team was placed 6th.

The Year 8 Boys’ competition saw the distances step up to 100m swim and 1000m run. Sam Timpany led his team, Lancaster Royal Grammar School, to victory and he achieved an individual second place. Rafi Scott, representing Bolton School, achieved best ever times in both his run and swim to be placed 18th overall and his team were placed 4th. In the Girls’ event Mary Hodgson was placed 9th and there was a PB for Jessica McCracken in the swim and 14th place overall. Both girls represented Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School.

Isaac Scott formed part of the Bolton School winning Y9 Boys’ team. Individually he was placed 11th and also achieved personal bests in both disciplines.

Sarah Hodgson competed for Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School in the Year 10 competition and was placed 2nd having achieved a best time in the swim section. In the Year 11 competition Isobel Rawlinson also achieved 2nd place, again representing Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School.

The final event was the Year 12/13 competition where Paul Hodgson, representing Lancaster Royal Grammar School, was placed 4th, having achieved PBs in both the swim and run.

Modern Pentathlete Isobel Rawlinson was in action again last weekend at the North West triathlon (run, swim, shoot) championship which was held at Salt Ayre. With the first six in each age group qualifying for the National Championship there was always going to be strong competition. Although her results in all three disciplines were slightly below her best, Isobel achieved 4th place overall, thus booking her place at the National Championships which will be held over the weekend of 14th/15th November in Wolverhampton.

10 year old Olivia Clinton entered the open biathlon competition – once again sweeping the board winning the swim and run on her way to overall victory. She should be congratulated on a new personal best time for her swim.

COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC and Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club for coaching the athletes for this event.

COLT juniors will next be in action representing their schools in the North West Schools biathlon championships and national schools qualifier in Liverpool on Sunday 8th November.

World Biathle Championships

Siblings Paul Hodgson and Sarah Hodgson recorded excellent performances at the world biathle (run-swim-run) championships in Monaco.

Paul was placed 13th in the 17/18 year old category and Sarah was placed 9th in the 13/14 category. Great experience for them both competing in an international competition - and the Med was an excellent location for the competition - it certainly beat the qualifying competition which was in Salford Quays! Both are keen to be selected for the GB squad again next season as the event is being staged in Dubai. Well done.

Ribble Valley Biathlon & Triathlon - Sunday 6th September

Ten City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club members travelled to Clitheroe on Sunday for the Ribble Valley Biathlon and Triathlon Championships. The athletes returned with a team gold medal, a team silver medal, two individual gold medals, two individual silver medals, an individual bronze medal, two fastest swim medals and two fastest run medals.

The club’s youngest athletes ran 1000m on the track and followed this with a 50m swim. Olivia Clinton set the standard winning the swim just touching out the second placed swimmer and then winning the run with a comfortable margin.

In the U13 category there were personal bests for all three athletes, Mary Hodgson, Georgia Hannam and Elizabeth Goodfellow, in both the pool and on the run. These excellent performances earned the team second place and Mary the individual bronze medal.

The U15 girls, who swim 100m and run 1000m, fielded four athletes; Sarah Hodgson, Lauren Munro-Bennett, Lauren Sharkey and Paige Clinton. With Sarah Hodgson winning the silver medal overall; Lauren Munro Bennett winning the run and being placed 6th overall and Lauren Sharkey being placed 5th overall the girls won the team gold medal with the second placed club trailing 900 points behind. Paige should be particularly pleased with her personal best time in her swim.

The distance stepped up again for the U17 teams with the athletes running 2000m and swimming 200m. Isobel Rawlinson won the swim and despite being piped to the line in the run won the overall gold medal. She also participated in the triathlon event, and despite a slightly erratic shoot she still won the silver medal. Robin Goodfellow was placed 4th overall.

COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC, Dallam AC, Helm Hill Runners, Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club, Carnforth Otters ASC and Troutbeck ASC for coaching the athletes for this event.

National Biathle Championship

Biathle is a continuous run/swim/run event and the British Championships and World championship qualifier was held at Salford Quays on Sunday 2nd August. With 5 athletes being selected from each age group, competition was fierce to be selected for the British Team. In the U15G event Sarah Hodgson was placed 3rd and in the U19 event brother Paul Hodgson was placed 4th - both athletes thereby booking their places for The World Championships at Monaco on Sunday 20th September.

Troutbeck Junior Triathlon

This event formed part of the North West Junior Series and it was no surprise to see Beau Smith cross the line first in the Youth category. He was ably supported by Liam McGuinness in 3rd spot. Specialist fell runner, Lauren Munro-Bennett, took 4th place in the girls' T3 event. It was good to see Liam's younger brother, Patrick McGuinness, competing in the T2 category where he was placed 11th.

2nd August - LONDON TRIATHLON

Whilst the senior COLT members were battling their way around Bolton and the Ironman UK course, Beau Smith was flying the COLT flag at the London Triathlon. It speaks volumes about Beaus talent and potential that he could take sixth place at such a well attended race.

26th July - SALFORD TRIATHLON

Beau Smith continued his winning ways after a hard-fought race! Coming out of the swim in the lead, Beau was caught and passed on the cycle section (on wet grass on his road bike!), he showed great strength as he fought back on the run to take the win. Liam McGuinness contuinued his rich vein of form with an inspiring performance.Liam again finished fourth after a valiant run.

19th July - BOUNDARY BREEZE

Beau Smith was the Youth Supersprint triathlon race winner and first in all disciplines. He was backed up by Liam McGuinness who was narrowly pipped for 3rd place, to finish in 4th.

18th July - NATIONAL YOUTH AQUATHON CAMPIONSHIPS

Beau Smith finished 11th but was very disappointing considering whilst winning at Hetton Lyons the previous week Beau beat at least three of the boys who finished in front of him here, including the race winner.

15th July - CLITHEROE BIATHLON

The 8th Ribble Valley biathlon, triathlon and tetrathlon will be held at Edisford, Clitheroe, Lancashire on Sunday 6th September 2009.

12th July - HETTON LYONS JUNIOR TRIATHLON

Beau Smith was in action yesterday (12th July), over in the North East where he took part in the Hetton Lyons Junior Triathlon. It was open water swim and draft legal bike over the Supersprint distance, to replicate this years IRC race, which made it worth the journey over there. He continued his winning streak, taking the win by 50 seconds overall, and is hoping to continue his good form next weekend when he races in the National Youth Aquathlon Championships at Parc Bryn Bach on Saturday, followed by the Youth Supersprint Triathlon at Boundary Breeze on Sunday.

5th July - NORTH OF ENGLAND BIATHLON

Due to other events taking place on this date only two athletes made the journey to Leigh. In the 15/16 age category Robin Goodfellow was placed 6th and younger sister Elizabeth Goodfellow was placed 11th in the 11/12 year old category.

28th June - MERSEY TRIATHLON

In the second of the NW series races Liam McGuinness was placed 3rd in the youth's race and his younger brother Patrick (future COLT?) won the short course race. Mary Hodgson was placed 4th in the Tristars 2 category.

27th June - SEFTON TRIATHLON & MORECAMBE 5K

Issac Scott was thrilled to be placed 4th boy in the intermediate category (school years 7&8) and younger brother Rafi backed him up well finishing 25th boy. Beau Smith once again won the senior race (school year 9 and above)for the third consecutive year. Also this year for the first time he was the overall winner (Seniors race over the same distance as Adults & Vets), with a time of 23:58 from second in 25:24.

Sunday saw him running along the prom in Morecambe in the 'Keep on Ticking' 5K Fun Run, and to his delight he won! The course was a little long (measured at 3.3 miles), and his time was 18:05, from last year's winner Lee Pascoe of Blackburn Harriers in second with 18:24.

14th May - BOLTON JUNIOR TRIATHLON

City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Juniors had their first taste of a triathlon event at the weekend when they participated in the Bolton Metro Triathlon at Salt Ayre, which formed part of the North West Children’s series. The athletes swam in the 25 metre pool then jumped onto their bikes and cycled around the cycle track before finally running on the athletics track. The distances for each discipline depending upon the athlete’s age and experience in the sport.

The event included a “taster” races for those new to the sport in which sisters Olivia and Paige Clinton took part. Both girls won their respective age groups convincingly with the fastest times in each of the three disciplines.

In the main competition Joshua Banks competed in the U12 (T1) age group swimming 150 metres followed by a 3000m cycle and 1200m run. Although this was his first triathlon, Joshua was third out of the water but lost ground on the bike, a new discipline to him. Nevertheless following a strong run he finished an excellent 5th overall.

The club had two competitors in the U14 (T2) age group. These triathletes swam 200m, cycled 6000m and finally ran 1200m. Mary Hodgson, in her first triathlon, was 4th out the water, but also lost ground in the bike section. With the second fastest run in her age group she achieved 5th place overall. Mary was well supported by Jessica McCracken who was close on her heels and achieved a credible 9th place overall.

The most impressive result of the day was, as expected, in the U17 (Youth) category where, against strong opposition, Beau Smith led from the start. Swimming 400m; cycling 9000m and running 3000m, Beau finished over 2 minutes ahead of his nearest rival.

Two future COLTs also took part in the competition section for the U9s “Tristarts”. Joshua’s eight year old sister Aimee Banks was placed 3rd in the girls’ event and Jessica’s brother, seven year old James McCracken, 3rd in the boys’ event.

COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC for preparing the athletes for the run; Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club and Carnforth Otters for their swimming training and Cog Set and Kent Valley RC for their cycling training.

The Junior squad will next be competing in the second North West Series race which is the Wirral Mini tri on Sunday 28th June.

20th May - NORTH WEST CHILDREN'S SERIES

17th May - NATIONAL BIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS

Nineteen City of Lancaster Triathlon (COLT) Club members travelled to Macclesfield on Sunday for the National Biathlon Championships, having qualified for the event at the North West Biathlon and Open Triathlon Championships which were held at Salt Ayre last month. The athletes returned with three team national bronze medals, an outstanding achievement for a new club.

The club’s youngest athletes ran 1000m on the track and followed this with a 50m swim. Olivia Clinton’s incredible finishing speed secured her 1st place in her run heat and 9th place overall in the competition. Joshua Banks’ impressive personal best time in the swim helped him to achieve an overall 12th place.

The U13 and U15 teams also ran 1000m but needed to swim 100m. The U13 girls’ team, consisting of Mary Hodgson (17th), Kirsty Fairhurst (31st) and Georgia Hannam (36th) were positioned 3rd after the run. Despite all three girls achieving personal best times in the water the team finished 6th overall.

The U15 girls’ team consisted of Sarah Hodgson (14th), Lauren Sharkey (26th) and Paige Clinton (43rd). There was a personal best time for Sarah on the track which helped the girls finish in a credible 5th position.

The U15 boy’s team consisting of Alasdair Fairhurst (8th), Luke Saul (22nd) and Isaac Scott (26th) however made it to the podium in third place. Isaac produced personal best times in both disciplines with Alasdair improving his run time.

The distance stepped up again for the U17 teams with the athletes running 2000m and swimming 200m. The girl’s team, comprising of Isobel Rawlinson, Robin Goodfellow and Reanne Harvey won the bronze team medal with best times achieved by Isobel in both discipline to earn an individual 9th place.

The third team medal went to the U17 men’s team consisting of James Bale (15th), Bill Timpany (19th) and Dylan Stewart (29th). Bill should be particularly pleased with his improvement in the run.

Paul Hodgson was the club’s sole entrant in the U20 class. Despite an accident prior to the swim which prevented him starting the run Paul improved his best swim time. In the Masters event Jennie Hodgson was placed 5th overall.

COLT would like to thank Lancaster and Morecambe AC and Lancaster City Amateur Swimming and Water Polo Club for providing sponsorship for the athletes to travel to the National Championships.
